Richard has a background in practical farming on the Liverpool Plains in North West NSW Australia. He managed the cropping operations of a large family business for nearly two decades. Crops grown included wheat, barley, chickpeas, faba beans, canola, sorghum, sunflowers, mung beans and cotton. Richard has been an early adopter of new farming technologies and travelled on a Nuffield Scholarship in 2003 researching precision applications of fertiliser. He has had extensive off farm consulting roles including working with the Grains Research and Development Corporation advising on research priorities for Australian grain growers.
Richard has recently held an academic position with the University of Sydney as Associate Professor of Agronomy and Farm Management responsible for the management of the Universities North West farms group. Richard currently holds the position of General Manager of research for the Australian Farm Institute where he is responsible for carrying out research projects and compiling reports on a range of farm and agriculture related issues.
